The Greenpoint warehouse fire some city officials are deeming the worst ever was still smoldering after 24 hours Wednesday morning.
Firefighters worked overnight and through the morning to try and get the blaze under control. The 10-alarm fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in the back of the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse and engulfed 15 buildings. Eighty units and more than 400 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames from side streets, while five fireboats pumped water on the fire from the East River.
Fourteen firefighters suffered minor injuries. Investigators are calling the fire suspicious and are looking into possible arson. The ruined warehouse complex was slated for redevelopment as high-rise housing.
