Police are investigating a home break-in on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint after they say about $13,700 worth of items were stolen.

News 12 spoke exclusively with the woman who lives in that home. She says she wants to remain anonymous for safety purposes.

She says after a weekend away with her husband and child, she came home to her bedroom in disarray.

“We walked into our bedroom, and it was ransacked. Somebody had been there, had destroyed a safe that we had that was hidden in the closet. So, all of my possessions and my mother, who had just passed away, all of her jewelry and my grandmother’s jewelry, was in that safe," she said.

She says she's not sure who would have known or how someone would have known where those valuables were.

“It was very frightening. We weren't sure if we were being watched. We weren't sure if we were alone, and then we didn't really know where to go from there," she said.

She says she's trying to spread the word and get them back, but without photos of many of the items, she's used Photoshop and old images to try and see if anyone comes across them. However, she says they're irreplaceable.

“When you steal people’s jewelry, you don't just steal random items, like people think, 'Oh, jewelry, no big deal. At least you have your health. At least it wasn't you. At least you didn't get hurt.' But really, you just steal people's memories because that's what it is at the end of the day," she said.

The family tells News 12 they're offering a reward for information about the theft or some of the stolen items.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police.
