Residents are mounting an effort to stop the sale of the Bay Ridge United Methodist Church. The church is set be sold to developers, who want to build condos in its place. However, residents are speaking out against the sale and say the church is a landmark.
The reverend of the church says the congregation decided to sell it years ago. He says the building is old and rundown, and the church has the right to sell the building without society interfering.
A group called Save the Green Church is trying to stop the sale and urge the Landmark Preservation Commission to officially recognize the 108-year-old building as a landmark.
The reverend says the congregation would use the money from the sale to set up a smaller church and support charitable funds.
