A special organization stepped up to bring some of the trappings of Christmas seaborne to barge workers stuck out on the water for the holiday.
Operation Christmas Cheer packed a fishing boat in Red Hook full of cookies, newspapers and cards to head out into the waters surround the city Christmas Day. Holiday helper elves pulled beside the barges and tug boats to deliver the gifts to the unsuspecting workers.
Creator Carolina Salguero says it?s the perfect way to say thank you to the barge workers. "Besides it being Christmas and being lonely, they're unacknowledged workers,? she says. ?They work all year long and they're delivering stuff that everybody uses, but most people don't know they're out here.?
Portside New York, the organization that runs the Christmas program, says local business and residents contribute to the gift collection given to the barge workers.
