Some community activists and leaders took to the streets of Canarsie Monday for an inaugural non-violence walk for Black Lives Matter.
The group stopped traffic and marched from the Breukelen Houses for a few blocks until they completed their journey where they started.
The group is made up of neighborhood adults, senior citizens and children. They called for an end to nationwide violence against black men and women and made a point to focus on children and their future.
Neighborhood leaders say the event will be held every year until they deem that violence against black lives has stopped.
