Gun detectors could begin appearing in New York City subway stations as early as today, according to the New York Police Department. The department says it is ready to launch the pilot program for these detectors at select stations, though specific locations have yet to be disclosed.

The NYPD says they are not revealing where the detectors will be placed to avoid alerting potential criminals, a precaution aimed at ensuring the results are not skewed.

They say the first batch of detectors should be installed by today at stations where bag checks are already being conducted. The program will initially start at one location before gradually expanding.

This pilot program is part of a larger effort to enhance security in the city’s transit system. Police data indicates that overall transit crime has decreased by 8% since the beginning of the year.

However, some precincts continue to face challenges. In the 73rd Precinct, transit crime has surged by 42.3% year-to-date, with 37 reported incidents, according to NYPD CompStat. Eighteen of these incidents occurred in close proximity to Broadway Junction.

Earlier this week, Mayor Eric Adams said the goal is to expand the gun detector program to every subway station across the city should the pilot be successful.
