Gun violence prevention advocates rally after Bronx mass shooting

The victims of a mass shooting in Williamsbridge continue to recover in the hospital, while gun violence prevention advocates rallied on the same corner where they were shot days later.

"We have these young children out here using these guns, we have a community out here that is afraid to come outside," said Eddie Miranda, an outreach worker for Stand Up to Violence.
Six people were shot inside the G&W grocery convenience store on Monday just before 5 p.m. A 40-year-old mother and her 12-year-old daughter were inside the store when police say the gunmen opened fire. Police say the mother was pushed in front of the gun and used as a human shield by one man believed to be the intended target of the bullets. She was shot in the stomach, and her daughter was shot in the leg.
The brazen attack followed a year where shootings were down by 27.8% in the 47th Precinct, with NYPD crime data reporting 26 shootings as of Dec. 29, 2024, compared to 36 shooting incidents in 2023.
Outreach groups like Stand Up to Violence and Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence work with area hospitals on crime prevention and to reduce the number of shootings in their communities.

"We hire people from these communities to work in the community, We see the decrease in shootings, we have young men with boots on the ground and are able to get in front of these situations before they escalate," said Miranda.
The mother and her daughter are expected to recover.
Police continue to search for two gunmen who got away from the scene.
