This weekend, Brooklyn residents took to the streets of East Flatbush to celebrate 59 years of independence for their homeland, Guyana.

Hundreds participated in this year's Guyana Independence Day Parade, including dance groups, bands and the city’s Department of Corrections Guyanese American Law Enforcement Alliance.

Paradegoers marched for several blocks along Church Avenue, showing off their pride, unity and strength in numbers.

Organizers say the parade is the largest Guyanese celebration outside of Guyana, and one of the largest West Indian celebrations in New York City.
