Gym owners rally to demand reopening of fitness classes
Studio fitness enthusiasts and gym owners rallied Tuesday outside City Hall to demand the reopening of fitness classes, a year after fitness centers were mandated to close due to the pandemic.
They claim their industry is the only one still facing a blanket shutdown in the city, while being allowed to operate in the rest of the state.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams joined demonstrators and danced outside together to send their message.
A spokesperson for Mayor Bill de Blasio commented previously, saying this was a state decision.
The city’s health commissioner also said that one of the concerns is the difficulty of wearing a mask in that environment, and also that it can get damp which makes them less effective.
Business owners say the studio fitness industry is suffering and the rules surrounding their continued closure do not make sense to them.
