Democrat Pamela Harris defeated Republican candidate Lucretia Regina-Potter in the 46th District Assembly race.
As a former corrections officer, Harris believes she has the discipline and ability to change the status quo, saying that it is her philosophy to take matters into her own hands to enact change.
The 46th District includes parts of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Fort Hamilton and Coney Island.
Another important race was for the state Senate seat vacated by John Sampson, who was convicted of lying to the FBI. In that race Democratic Assemblywoman Roxanne Persaud defeated GOP candidate Jeffrey Ferretti.
