Hundreds of community members received pantry items from the Chinese American Planning Council Tuesday. 

The Sunset Park organization says it had to adjust its services due to the coronavirus pandemic but that an estimated 700 to 800  people received donated grocery items. 

The “Hate Has No Home Here” event has occurred across the city with different organizations over the past couple of months. 

It is in response to recent hate crimes against the Asian American community. The Met Council sponsored the event to fund the food that is given out. 

The Chinese American Planning Council says it had never operated as a pantry before but that during the pandemic, staff realized how badly the community was hurting—many losing their jobs or seeing reduced hours.  

Senior community members can sign up for appointments to avoid standing in long lines. 

The Chinese American Planning Council also delivers meals to homebound seniors and serves hot meals every week. 

Staff also helps deliver medication or bring people to medical appointments as needed.
