A senior citizen living at the Eleanor Roosevelt houses in Bed-Stuy says she has been living with health hazards in her apartment for several months.
Migdalia Apotnoe says that despite her attempts to communicate her concerns, the conditions in her home remain unresolved.
Apotnoe has lived in her apartment for nearly 12 years. She says she had a pipe burst in her kitchen about eight months ago. She used a notepad to communicate her experiences because she is deaf. For the past three months, she has been without a kitchen wall, and mold has begun to cover the floor beneath her sink.
“Communicating with NYCHA has been difficult,” she noted, referring to the New York City Housing Authority.
Although she has filed several complaints, she feels her concerns have not been addressed. She tells News 12 that NYCHA removed her kitchen wall, leaving it exposed with only plastic and duct tape for protection.
“NYCHA told me to wait for new cabinets in January 2025,” she wrote.
Mold is also in other places in her apartment. She says she can smell the mold, making it hard to breathe. In her bathroom there's mold surrounding her tub and other areas.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA for comment. A representative confirmed that a staff member visited Apotnoe’s apartment and that they are expediting the necessary repairs. They say that work is expected to begin within the week.
