A new study released by the health department paints a poor health portrait in Brooklyn.The New York City Department of Mental Health and Hygiene commissioned the report that took into account statistics, disease, insurance and more. It was conducted in the Prospect Heights, Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights and Brownsville sections. Overall, one in five adult residents say they consider themselves in poor health. It also reports elevated levels of disease in the borough. Statistics show Brooklyn residents suffer from high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, including twice the amount of diagnosed HIV cases than in New York City overall.The report also says one in three Brooklyn residents does not have a regular doctor. It also shows elevated percentages of residents without insurance. Experts say the overall explanation may be directly correlated to income, with Brooklyn?s poverty level remaining 10 percent higher than New York City overall.
