New Yorkers are sparking up their grills for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend, and Stop & Shop is bringing you some healthy options to consider for your barbecue.
"We're trying to showcase and highlight the flavor and the essence of summer, with better for you options," said Tina McGeough, a registered dietician of Stop & Shop.
Potato salad often has lots of mayo and fats, so one alternative option is to make a Mexican street corn salad with fresh corn, zucchini, tomatoes, onion and garlic and some cotija cheese for Mexican cheese corn flavor.
For proteins, swapping out a burger with a leaner cut like chicken or turkey burgers is a popular healthy alternative. McGeough seasons her chicken with garlic powder, chili powder, cayenne pepper and cumin.
Mixing in a watermelon salad or fresh fruit like peaches can often help balance out the meal of proteins and carbs.
McGeough makes a grilled peach dessert with honey, reduced fat vanilla yogurt, and raspberries.
