It may feel comfortable this morning, but don't be fooled — the heat is coming fast.
A Heat Advisory is in effect today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and it could feel as hot as 104 degrees across the city, according to the National Weather Service. That kind of heat can be dangerous, especially for seniors, kids, or anyone without air conditioning at home. Commuter we spoke with say they're as ready as they can be
“I’m preparing by just staying hydrated,” said Sarah, a commuter outside the Barclays subway station. “Got to drink a lot of water, stay inside — try to avoid being out here if not necessary.”

How to beat the heat

City leaders say this is not the day to “tough it out.” If you don’t have AC or need a break from the heat, there are about 35 cooling centers open across Brooklyn today. These include libraries, senior centers and community centers. Some locations are also pet-friendly.
You can call 311 or visit the city’s Cool Options Map online to find one near you.

Quick Tips:

  • Stay indoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. — that’s the hottest part of the day.
  • Drink water often, even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Find shade if you’re outside and take breaks if you’re working or walking.
  • Check on your neighbors — especially seniors and folks without AC.
Most heat-related deaths in New York City happen inside people’s homes, not outside. Many of those who die from heat illness don’t have or don’t use air conditioning. That’s why city agencies are urging people to check on loved ones and help each other stay safe.
Cooling centers will have air conditioning, water, and a place to sit. If you can’t stay home safely, spend a few hours at one of these centers to cool down.
REMEMBER:
  • Never leave kids or pets in the car — not even for a minute.
  • Save energy where you can: set your AC to 78 degrees and avoid using ovens or dryers during peak hours.
  • Stay informed by signing up for emergency alerts through Notify NYC.
Bottom line? Stay cool. Stay hydrated. And don’t forget to check on someone who might need help today.
