Cyclists who hit the city streets without protecting their heads may soon be forced to pay up.
Councilman David Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) is introducing legislation that would make it illegal to not wear a helmet while riding a bike. He says more than 90 percent of all cyclists who die in accidents aren't wearing one.
If passed, first offenders would be fined $25, but by the third offense, riders will pay $100. Currently, only those aged 14 and under, and professional delivery riders are required to wear their helmets.
The legislation has been referred to the City Council's Transportation Committee.
