A Bronx politician says he hopes people unite during Hispanic Heritage Month.
"It means a lot, the fact is, being Puerto Rican and Dominican and married to a Mexican. It is a time of celebration. To celebrate culture it is to celebrate the accomplishment in our Hispanic community,” Cabrera tells News 12. "I was raised in Puerto Rico and there I had an opportunity to learn Spanish, I was 4 years old and I came back when I was 25 years old."
Cabrera is now vying to become the next Bronx borough president. Throughout his career, he says he and his wife made sure their kids knew their family history.
He says those traditions are now being passed down to his grandchildren.
"I like to see this month being celebrated in unity. I envision a Bronx where all the people groups come together and just celebrate what is important to them, what really matters to them,” said Cabrera.
