A number of Brooklyn residents are fighting a city councilman's proposition to expand a Kensington playground, resulting in the loss of one of the few remaining roller rinks in the borough.
Councilman David Greenfield's planned renovation is to remove the rink at Di Gilio Playground and install a climbing wall, more benches and a workout area. The playground is home to one of only four roller rinks in the entire borough.
Greenfield says he believes the rink is unused, but the players of Brooklyn Roller Hockey say they regularly meet there on the weekends.
The league has proposed an alternative plan, which would involve molding the rink so it can double as a soccer field, allowing children to use the space as well.
The group reached out their community board and the city's Parks Department. They were recommended to move to other rinks like the one in Fort Hamilton, which they don't have access to.
Greenfield's renovation plan is still waiting government approval.
