The city is moving forward with plans to move dozens of sex offenders into a Brooklyn shelter, but the organization running the facility opposes the idea.

The Doe Fund Shelter on Porter Avenue is tucked away in a heavily industrial neighborhood, making it an attractive place for the city's Department of Homeless Services to put convicted sex offenders.

But representatives for the shelter say they can't provide employment to sex offenders, who are banned from going near schools or playgrounds. The organization has a nationally replicated program that employs the homeless people it shelters.

They say the sex offenders would then have too much idle time and could endanger the shelter's staff and the Bushwick neighborhood.

City officials say they are obligated to provide shelter to anyone who requests it, but the shelter is hoping that residents will join the fight against the proposal at a town hall meeting next Wednesday.
