The homeless population is declining in the Bronx and citywide, according to official results from the city's last count.
The Department of Homeless Services says the number dropped 13 percent between 2005 and 2006. The figure decreased another 2 percent between 2006 and 2007.
The numbers are encouraging for Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC), who has vowed to reduce the homeless population two-thirds by 2009. He plans to accomplish the goal by increasing the capacity of drop-in centers and outreach programs.
Volunteers canvassed city streets in January as part of the DHS' Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) count.
