New Yorkers who meet certain income requirements can file their taxes for free this year through the city’s tax prep initiative.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection and NYC Health + Hospitals are promoting the program as the 2026 tax season gets underway. The free service is available to residents who live and work in the city and make $97,000 or less as a family, or $68,000 or less as a single filer.
“New Yorkers shouldn’t have to jump through hoops or pay outrageous fees just to file their taxes,” Mayor Mamdani said.
Services will be offered at 140 locations across the five boroughs, including select NYC Health + Hospitals sites.
At in‑person locations, IRS‑certified volunteers will assist filers in completing their returns. Residents can also drop off tax documents and pick up completed returns later. Virtual filing is available as well, with certified volunteers providing assistance through secure video conferencing.
Mayor Mamdani says their goal is to expand access to the program that was available during the Adams administration.
“We know that while we are proud in having served 110,000 households in the previous iteration of this, about half of New Yorkers are eligible of this, that means there are far more New Yorkers across the five boroughs who have yet to hear about this,” he said.
The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection is also launching a new effort to crack down on deceptive corporate practices that could expose filers to unfair fees or loan products. Commissioner Sam Levine said inspectors will be deployed to ensure tax preparers are following the law.
“We are urging New Yorkers to ask preparers for the Consumer Bill of Rights before paying anyone to file your taxes. If you think your rights are being violated, please let us know,” Levine said.
