The line stretched around the block in downtown Brooklyn Wednesday for the proposed Atlantic Rail Yards project public hearing.
The Empire State Development Corporation, the state agency that would oversee the project, held the hearing to get the opinions of community groups and elected officials. Supporters of the proposed project are happy it would bring more jobs and housing to the area. Opponents worry it will ruin the neighborhood, cause overcrowding in schools and traffic.
The proposed $4.2 billion Atlantic Rail Yards project would include a NBA arena for the New Jersey Nets as well as residential and commercial buildings. Developer Forest City Ratner is planning to build above rail yards at Atlantic and Flatbush avenues.
The Empire State Development Corporation is planning to hold a community forum on September 12 at Brooklyn Technical College for those who were unable to make the first hearing.
