Roads in Norwalk were impacted by the I-95 oil tanker fire as drivers tried to navigate around the closures.

Norwalk police said the following roads have been closed to help detour traffic throughout the city:

Fairfield Avenue is closed from Cedar Street to Connecticut Avenue.

Cedar Street is closed eastbound from Connecticut Avenue to Fairfield Avenue and is closed in both directions from Fairfield Avenue to Reed Street.

Stuart Avenue is closed southbound from Connecticut Avenue to Reed Street

Fairfield Avenue is closed from Cedar Street to Connecticut Avenue.

Cedar Street is closed eastbound from Connecticut Avenue to Fairfield Avenue and is closed in both directions from Fairfield Avenue to Reed Street.

Stuart Avenue is closed southbound from Connecticut Avenue to Reed Street

Back roads in the city were jammed as Norwalk police tried to divert traffic off the highway.

Drivers from across Connecticut were frustrated with traffic and called it a “nightmare commute.”

“I’ve been commuting from Monroe down to Norwalk for 25 years. It’s never taken me two and a half hours on the backroads this morning,” said John Andros, from Monroe.

Police officers could be seen at different intersections directing and rerouting traffic.

“I saw it was going to take an hour plus on the Merritt and I-95. I thought it was a normal day accident, on Waze. So I started on my commute, and everything was backed up,” said Andros.

Many of the vehicles filling the streets of Norwalk were commercial trailers.

“We got to use I-95 every day, we need I-95, we cannot shut I-95 down,” said a truck driver from Maryland.
