An East Atlantic Beach woman donated her kidney to a fellow teacher earlier this month at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

Maggie Goodman, 34, heard her co-worker, 47-year-old Thomas Conveney, was in need of a kidney. She got tested for compatibility and realized she was a match.

Goodman says she felt "very lucky" to be the one who was able to help Conveney, who is also a Long Island native.

Conveney says Goodman has given him the chance to see milestones in his daughter's life that he otherwise may have missed.

"I can see my daughter graduate - maybe I can see her wedding," Conveney says.

Both Goodman and Conveney, who work together at a Queens middle school, hope it serves as an important lesson for their students.

"I think it's a good thing for them to see someone helping someone else," Goodman says. "And maybe they take that with them, maybe they don't, but if one kid it sticks with, that's a great thing for me."
