Industry City in Sunset Park is touting the opening of its 650th business, representing over 9,000 employees across manufacturing, food production and technology sectors.
The space that once was home to a rail storage facility now includes a food hall, event space for venues and a walkable series of interior atriums designed to highlight the verticality and unique history of the space.
For Fodera Guitars, a shop specializing in hand-built guitars that opened in the space in the 1980s, the turnaround has been stark.
"They come in, they are astonished, it's amazing what Industry City has done with the space they've turned it into like SoHo down here," said co-founder Joey Lauricella.
He now performs in a band at a distillery and live venue below the shop, something he never thought possible.
For Burcu Garnier, of Color Atelier, a custom paint shop specializing in plaster and eco-friendly painting, they were able to grow to a larger space inside just eight months inside the space.
"It's an amazing space with natural light, and we love the creatives, working with others in this space together," she said.
Those behind the scenes at Industry City say they have had multiple tenants grow faster than their lease space since joining the campus.
"We had more than a dozen businesses that asked for lease expansions they came to us saying we need more space can you help us," said Industry City SVP Jeff Fein.
Fein tells News 12 the goal for future growth is for manufacturers to be able to sell their goods direct to customers at a store front just below their production hub.
"That way you have customers coming to the brick and mortar and it's just a few floors down from the hub, so you can grow to direct sales, and the foot traffic here," he said.
He says with over six million square feet up for grabs, 650 businesses is just the beginning for art, history and business hub in Sunset Park.
"We were excited to take over the property in 2013 and this is pretty close to our dream vision for this space to have collaborative innovative tenants," Fein said.
