Careless smoking is being blamed for a fire in Crown Heights that left a 56-year-old man dead Thursday night, investigators say.
They say the fire started in Rupert Smith's apartment on the second floor of 451 Kingston Ave. around 10 p.m.
By the time firefighters found him, they say he was unconscious and badly burned. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Isaac Hagel, the building's landlord, called Smith a "pleasant person."
