Rising gas prices are adding strain for drivers in News York City, as costs at the pump increase amid the ongoing war with Iran.
In the Baychester section, prices along Bartow Avenue reached $3.79 per gallon at both a Shell station and a Mobil station across the street — among the lowest in the borough. Even at those prices, demand remains high, with drivers frequently filling every available pump.
As prices continue to climb, many drivers say they are bracing for more than just the start of a new workweek — they are also worrying about the cost of getting there.
According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in New York City is now $3.91, approaching $4. That is up 5 cents from the previous day and a sharp increase from a month ago, when prices were below $3 per gallon. In the Bronx, the average mirrors the citywide rate.
Drivers say the rising costs are forcing changes in their routines. Some are cutting back on trips, while others are limiting how much they fill their tanks.
“It use to be like $40 to fill my tank and now we’re talking $50 to $60 just for a sedan,” one driver said.
Some drivers say comparison shopping is no longer worth it, choosing instead to fill up at the nearest station rather than spend additional gas searching for lower prices.
For those looking to save, experts suggest paying with cash when possible or filling up at wholesale clubs, where members can receive small discounts.
