Irvington Democrat hopes to make history by filling vacant Westchester Board of Legislators seat

An Irvington Democrat is hoping to add his name to the Westchester County history books next month.
David Imamura would become the first Asian-American to serve on the Westchester County Board of Legislators if he wins next month's special election to replace MaryJane Shimsky.
Imamura, who formerly chaired New York's Independent Redistricting Commission, is a longtime Democratic district leader and the grandson of Asian-American war heroes.
In an interview with News 12's senior reporter Tara Rosenblum, Imamura outlined his goals and reasons for running. "I believe in county government. One of my first experiences in lawmaking was helping with passage of the Immigrant Protection Act. The pen George Latimer used is right behind me. One of things that experience taught me is county government can help people. That's why I'm running - to ensure Westchester is affordable to everyone."
So far, no Republican has announced plans to run for the seat.
The special election is Feb. 28.
