Long Islanders looking to dispose of any medications or prescription drugs can do so properly at any of the 10 locations set up across the Island.

It's all part of National Drug Take Back Day Saturday. One drop-off location is at state police headquarters in Farmingdale.

"On this day, we advertise in conjunction with the DEA and this is one of the posters," says Floral Park Police Commissioner Stephen McAllister. "We want you to clean out these drugs from your home so that way little Mary and little Johnny, when they have a party, they aren't going to go shopping in your medicine chest and they now basically borrow your drugs and use it for illicit purposes. We don't want that to happen."

This initiative, along with others, have been implemented as ways to combat the opioid crisis the country has been facing for years.

Paul Maffetone lost his brother to that crisis 10 years ago this February and says he can't emphasize enough how important it is to take part in the drop-off event.

"They say that your kids first drug dealer is your parents medicine cabinet," says Maffetone. "So, it's super important for anybody in the house, that if you have prescription medication that you didn't finish to do these events, to get involved. Go through your medicine cabinets, see what's in there."

The hope is that events like this one will help save lives.
