An FDNY paramedic from Huntington was brutally killed in an unprovoked attack in Queens Thursday afternoon, police say.

Flags flew at half-staff and black bunting was draped across the facade of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad on Friday. Russo-Elling served there as a volunteer for nearly 30 years.

"She was always so kind and help, really giving of all of her time and energy to our organization," says Katie Donegan, of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad.

Friends also left flowers outside Russo-Elling's home on Derby Avenue.

"It's just heart-wrenching for everybody," says Monica Soberal, a neighbor of Russo-Elling.

Other neighbors described Russo-Elling as "bubbly," "animated" and "always friendly." They say she loved water sports, hosting parties and telling stories.

Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth called Russo-Elling a selfless professional who gave herself as a paramedic and 9/11 first responder, on top of being a dedicated mother and daughter.

Meanwhile, Huntington Manor Fire Department called Russo-Elling a longtime member of the community

Russo-Elling is the second member of the EMS to die in the line of duty in the last five years. She leaves behind her parents, a daughter and a squad of first responders who all say she'll never be forgotten.

Police have charged 34-year-old Peter Zisopoulos with the fatal stabbing, calling it an unprovoked attack.
