Riding a bicycle from Newark to Washington D.C. can be physically grueling – especially this time of year with the heat.
But a group came out to participate in the “Historically Black College and University Scholarship ride.”
About a dozen cyclists just finished the 214-mile journey in the nation's capital with the finish line right at Howard University.
They ride to raise scholarship money for Newark high school kids so that they can attend an historically Black college.
Columbia bank sponsors the ride as they chip in $10,000. In all, this year's ride raised $50,000.
Howard graduate and Newark resident Hassan Abdus-Sabur started this ride a couple years ago.
The money this year is going to 6 Newark students attending Howard, Morgan State, Maryland Eastern Shore and North Carolina A&T State.
Pedal power is fueling education in Newark and that's “Jersey Proud.”
