Park goers in Bed-Stuy are looking forward to the changes promised by Mayor Bill de Blasio as part of his new initiative to create park equality.
Jesse Owens Playground is among 35 public parks across the city, including five others in Brooklyn, that will split $130 million for total makeovers.
De Blasio said that over the years, many parks in low-income areas haven't received much funding, and that it's unfair to residents in those neighborhoods. In fact, the 35 parks on his list only received $250,000 combined over a 20-year period.
The mayor's office says work on the parks will begin early in 2015 and should be completed by the end of 2017. The Parks Department will also work closely with the Department of Education on scheduling to minimize the impact of construction on students' use of playgrounds during the school year.
