Jets release running back Le'Veon Bell after underwhelming 17 games
The New York Jets' brutal season has taken another step downward.
The Jets released running back Le'Veon Bell following rumors that the team was trying to trade the three-time Pro Bowl choice.
Bell signed a four-year, $52.5 million deal with the Jets before the 2019 season. It was a major splash for New York at the time, in hopes that under Adam Gase and Sam Darnold, the team could compete in the AFC East.
But after three seasons with over 1,000 yards in Pittsburgh, Bell's first season at MetLife Stadium was underwhelming, racking up under 800 yards and just three touchdowns.
Bell's 2020 season has been limited -- he was injured week 1, and only returned last week, where he rushed for just 60 yards.
According to ESPN reports, the Jets were seeking a trade partner for Bell as he was unhappy with his role on the team.
The release marks another brutal moment for the team that is already 0-5 and is facing questions about how long Gase will remain at the helm of the team. Frank Gore, 37, now becomes the de-facto starting running back for Gang Green.
