Members of the Jewish population in Brooklyn are shocked and saddened Thursday after learning that the Israeli prime minister suffered a significant stroke.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon underwent hours of surgery to remove blood from his brain following a stroke. The 77-year-old premier was supposed to undergo heart surgery Thursday to repair a hole but instead was rushed to a hospital Wednesday.
Some Brooklyn residents say Sharon did a lot for Israel and hope he recovers.
Vice Premier Ehud Olmert has been named acting prime minister.
