A student at an East New York school has reached out to the mayor in an attempt to get an ousted principal reinstated.
The superintendent removed the principal of J.H.S. 292 a week ago. Rianna Smith, a middle school student there, wrote a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio for help in getting former Principal Gloria Williams to return.
In her letter, Smith told de Blasio that Williams helped her to continue to do good work and stay on the right track. The student said that because of Williams, she was inspired to compete in martial arts competitions and win awards around the world.
Students and parents protested outside the school last week, petitioning the Department of Education to bring the principal back. Protesters say the DOE has given no explanation for the removal.
The student says she realizes that the chance of the mayor helping is unlikely, but she is not giving up hope.
