More than 5,000 people laced up their sneakers and hit the pathways of Prospect Park despite the morning chill to support running programs targeting children. The Jingle Bell Jog was organized by the New York Road Runners program to raise funds for city youth running initiatives -- something that Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott says is more important than ever. "If we can help reduce obesity and get our kids into healthy habits, any way I can do that, that's important for me to show," he says. The state Department of Education recently announced that it found some evidence that kids in city schools may not be receiving the minimum required physical education. That is why organizers of today's event say it's critical to teach children the importance of exercise and get them moving. The Jingle Bell Jog has raised about $200,000 that will go toward youth running programs.
