The pool of potential jurors filed into Brooklyn Supreme Court Monday morning for the murder trial of Nixzaliz Santiago, who is accused of killing her young daughter, Nixzmary Brown.
Investigators say the 7-year-old Brown was malnourished, abused and eventually beaten to death in 2006.
The girl's stepfather, Cesar Rodriguez, has already been convicted of manslaughter for his role in her death. Santiago's attorneys say Rodriguez was responsible for the blow that caused Brown's death.
Jury selection is expected to last about one week. The trial is expected to last six to nine weeks.
Santiago faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
