The community of Keyport is mourning the loss of their fire chief, Timothy Pfleger, who died in the line of duty.

Pfleger joined the Keyport Fire Department back in 2007 as a cadet. He served the ranks of lieutenant and captain before becoming the chief of the department in 2022.

"The community experienced an unimaginable loss on Friday with the passing of Fire Chief Timothy Pfleger, who was in the process of recovering from injuries as a result of an accident coming home from a training class at the Monmouth County Fire Academy this past summer," Keyport Mayor Collette J. Kennedy said in a statement. "His leadership collegiality and friendship will be missed by all."

Services will be posted by the fire department when made available.

The circumstances surrounding his death are unknown at this time.
