Crown Heights hosted a Kwanzaa celebration Tuesday to kick off the weeklong cultural celebration of African heritage with a candle-lighting ceremony.
Organizers lit the traditional kinara and poured water to honor the deceased.
And more than 2,000 people looked on at the St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf to register for the second-annual Kwanzaa Bar Crawl, aimed at supporting black-owned businesses in Brooklyn and Harlem.
Comedian Kerry Coddett, the organizer, says she hopes to spread awareness about the holiday and its message of unity and economic empowerment.
The crawlers will visit more than 25 bars, and a portion of the proceeds will go to social justice organizations.
