Firefighters are battling a forest fire that has consumed more than 12,000 acres of land at Wharton State Forest.
The fire broke out in a remote section of the forest and was discovered early Sunday afternoon, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The fire initially was small but spread quickly Sunday night, fueled by dry and breezy conditions.
The Forest Fire Service says it is about 70% contained.
The fire, which was producing dense smoke, was spanning areas of Washington, Shamong, Hammonton and Mullica Township. Those who live in the area are urged to use caution.
Authorities say no injuries or property damage have been reported, but protection is in place by local volunteer fire departments from Atlantic, Burlington and Ocean counties.
Some roads in the area remain closed.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
