A 28-year-old man was shot and killed by police in East Flatbush Sunday morning while responding to call for a domestic dispute.

Commanding Officer Frank Giordano said during a news conference that six uniformed police officers arrived after 9 a.m. to a home where a woman called 911. She reported that a man that she knew was harassing her and was actively working to get a restraining order against him.

Giordano says the man ran off on 86th Street as officers approached him. They caught up to him on Coventry Road.

“He had a firearm in his hand,” Giordano said. “He was ordered multiple times to drop that weapon.”

The man was shot once in the chest after not complying with officer instructions. Giordano says officers rendered aid and took him by patrol car to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, where he was pronounced dead.

When asked why he wasn’t taken by an ambulance, Giordano said they were “trying to save his life.”

The man’s name has not yet been released.

A witness who spoke with News 12 said the man had mental issues and was handcuffed on the street for seven minutes before he was taken to the hospital.
