UPDATE 12:06 PM: The water main break is also impacting residents of Haledon and North Haledon, both police departments say. There is a free water distribution happening at Purified Alkaline Water in Haldon until 2 p.m. There is also a free distribution at the North Haledon VFW on High Mountain Road until 4 p.m.
Repairs are still being made on a 30-inch water main that broke in Paterson.
The expectation is that work could be finished and water restored before Saturday.
The Passaic Valley Water Commission expanded its boil water advisory Friday evening to include the entire City of Paterson and the Borough of Prospect Park.
With no water to drink or use for cooking, a long line of people formed outside of Hinchliffe Stadium, where the city of Paterson handed out free bottled water.
The giveaway started at noon and will be taking place until 9 p.m.
Sylvia Farrar was there to pick up cases of free bottled water.
“Not knowing how this is going to be I decided I’d better come and get some water," she said.
While the Pascack Valley Water Commission is working to fix the broken pipe as quickly as possible, residents admit that finding no water coming out of the tap was a tough way to start the day.
“This is totally inconvenient. Thanks God it’s not like brutally hot today, but it’s very much inconvenient,” said Lawanda Whitfield.
If some water is flowing from the tap in your home and you choose to use it, be sure to boil it before cooking, brush your teeth or washing dishes.
