One Long Island animal rescue group featured photos of its dogs and cats on pizza boxes to help them find their “fur-ever” homes.
Last Chance Rescue teamed up with Joe's Pizza in Holbrook with the goal to get some residents thinking about adopting four-legged friends.
"It increases the awareness about rescue in general about the ability to foster," said Mackenzie Deluca, of Last Chance Rescue.
About eight dogs and cats from Last Chance Rescue were featured on top of the Joe's Pizza boxes this weekend. Joe's said they've sent out nearly 5,600 pizzas boxes already.
"Everyone sitting around the family table eating Joe's Pizza they get to look at the dogs. Maybe it will strike up a conversation and get the dogs adopted," said the pizzeria's Phillip Donofrio.
On Sunday, the rescue group brought some other adoptable pets to the pizza shop. The group said it got six applications.
The group said there was great demand for adoptions during the pandemic, but now the tide has turned and some shelters are seeing lots of pet surrenders.
"Some of our shelter partners are so overcrowded that they are at three-times capacity that they should be at, so it's really important that we find dogs homes and we can pull more dogs and cats out of shelters, getting them into foster or 'fur'ever homes," Deluca explained.
More information about Last Chance Rescue can be found at the group's website.
