Last steel beam placed for 15-story borough-based jail in Downtown Brooklyn

City officials and members of Iron Workers Local 361 celebrated on Wednesday as the last steel beam was placed at 275 Atlantic Ave.

“We are focusing on individualized specific treatment, so people are moving away from the criminal justice system completely," said Deanna Logan, director of the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice.
These jails are set to replace the Rikers Island complex, which is legally required to close by August 2027.
“What we’re focused on is doing everything in our power to close Rikers," said Department of Corrections Commissioner Stanley Richards.
The nearly $3 billion site will be able to house 1,040 incarcerated men, according to the city's Department of Design and Construction.
The current completion date for the jail is 2029.
