The City of Newark celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by giving out scholarships to Latinx students at the Newark Museum of Art.
Alondra Sanchez was one of the scholarship recipients. She is studying elementary education at Montclair State University.
"As a first-generation college student, you have to work hard for it,” she says. “And thanks to working hard, I got a scholarship that I could invest into my school funds.”
Newark School Superintendent Roger Leon says that scholarships like this are important.
"The mayor and the entire team are really focusing on the success of Latinos in particular in the city of Newark. And making a special focus on the scholarship award recipients,” he says.
Latinx-owned businesses like Goya were represented at Tuesday’s event, while local artists, leaders, and first responders in the city's Latinx community were also honored.
