Latrice Walker beat out six other candidates, including Anthony Herbert, to win the Democratic primary for the New York State Assembly's 55th District.
William Boyland Jr. held the district's seat but was convicted in March of bribery, extortion and fraud.
Herbert ran against Boyland a few years ago and lost.
The district covers Brownsville and Ocean Hill, as well as parts of East New York, Crown Heights and Bushwick.
