Lawmakers are taking swift action in an effort to get herbal Viagra supplements off the shelves.

State Sen. Jeff Klein joined a growing list of legislators looking to ban the supplements. He says the FDA was aware that the herbal supplements contain the active ingredient found in Viagra, but only issued public notifications instead of recalling the drugs.

Sen. Jose Peralta and Klein introduced legislation to ban the supplements.

Officials say the herbal supplements can contain a number of herbal or plant-based remedies for erectile dysfunction and to boost libido. They say the drug can also contain traces of other compounds, with varying dosages, that are not disclosed on its labels.

Experts say the unidentifiable compounds could have adverse effects when mixed with other drugs and alcohol. They say they can cause dangerous side effects such as low blood pressure that can contribute to long-term organ failure.

Medical professionals say the herbal supplements are cheaper than the blue Viagra pills, and are relatively easy to get.
