The Department of Corrections announced the death of 35-year-old Kevin Bryan, who died last Wednesday.
A spokesperson from the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association (COBA) confirmed that the cause of death was a suicide, and the family lawyer says Bryan was dealing with drug dependency at the time.
"This is someone who worked at Chase Bank. Who worked with the church for 15 years. For 15 years he worked with the church in an outreach program,” said the lawyer representing the Bryan family. “This is not someone who would acclimate well to being incarcerated."
The COBA spokesperson confirmed that Bryan locked himself in a staff bathroom and hung himself, and that a corrections officer was allegedly attempting to call for backup because he was the only officer staffed in that area at the time.
They confirmed that Bryan was being monitored inside of an officer station because he was being ‘bullied’ by other inmates.
"He was being assaulted, attacked, tortured and it doesn't seem like they did much to prevent it," said the lawyer.
The family is planning to conduct their own investigation into the incident and bring legal action against the city.
