Legislation would curb officers’ vocabulary when reading rights to juvenile defendants
New York Sen. Michael Gianaris is introducing legislation that would change the way police read defendants their Miranda rights.
The Democrat from Queens says too many juvenile defendants do not understand the Miranda rights read before they are questioned.
He says the legislation would require officers to use plain English to defendants under the age of 18.
He says the warning often contains vocabulary from a college reading level, prompting many juvenile defendants to unintentionally waive their rights.
