Brooklyn legislators are pushing for Mayor Bill de Blasio to expand ferry service in the borough to include a route to Governors Island.
De Blasio announced plans to expand ferry service citywide earlier this year. Part of the plan includes increased service to summer hotspot Governors Island, which is open to the public seven days a week. Legislators say the problem is that the service would not run from anywhere in Brooklyn, which is only about 800 yards from the island.
Several legislators penned a letter to de Blasio, saying that expanding the service to Brooklyn would be "necessary to promote economic development and growth."
News 12 reached out to the mayor's office for comment. A spokesman from the New York City Economic Development Corp. said, "We will continue to work with the community and our elected officials as we move toward a major expansion of ferry service in 2017."
